A novel based on history of the author's family in 1930's Brazil. Two sisters, Luzia and Emilia, grow up poor in the interior of Brazil, and are trained as seamstresses by their aunt. Their lives take drastically different paths influenced by cangaceirosj(bandits) and political unrest. The story of these sisters' lives was very well researched and I learned much about the history of Brazil as well as enjoying the excellent story-telling of Ms. Peebles.
