Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors, but she really outdid herself with this Tortallan heroine. Don't get me wrong, I could never choose a favorite, but I really love Beka. She is not only common born, but a resident of the Lower City. She's the most common of the Tortallan heroines, and yet she rises to greatness in her first story. I love the characters of this story, to start with. They are so believable that I can relate them to people I know. They make me smile, and they really just make me care about them. The setting, of course. Cannot forget the setting. Tortall. What more do I have to say? Tortall is a land that I love to get lost in, and I feel almost as much at home there as Beka does in the story. This really is a wonderful book, and I would recommend it to anyone who even remotely likes fantasy.
