honestly, i had much higher hopes for this book. not quite sure why though, it was written in 1920! and in russian! i liked the way it was written, and it was very fast to read. sometimes it was hard to follow the dialogue, it felt kind of fragmented - but it was written as journal entries. for when it was written, it has great future imagery and the picture it painted of totalitarianism was chilling. the line that sticks with me was something like "when man has no freedom, he has ultimate happiness." basically, the one state has brainwashed people to complete conformity and the people are forced to believe they are happy because they know nothing else. one thing about this future that i like is just registering with the state to have sex with someone. that would make dating so much easier!
