Wow! I don't think I've ever read a book that fast! Seth has been sick for the past couple of days and wants me by him so I have had lots of opportunity to read as I stayed home from church yesterday and work today with him. (my excuse is that I did not want to make a lot of noise by cleaning while he was trying to sleep on the couch!) This was an incredible book. We read if for my book club. I find it interesting that most of the last few books that I have read have dealt with the holocaust or WWII in some way - and I didn't know it before reading the books. So, combined with having lots of German in me and by reading all these books this dark time has been on my mind a lot lately. I have had the opportunity to view this war and its tragedy's from many angles lately. The last few books I have read have dealt with wartimes in Austria, England and the United States. This book takes place in France. As soon as I realized what was going to happen in this book I was horrified but could not put the book down. I only hope and pray that it really did not happen. On July 16, 1942 thousands of Jews in France were rounded up by the French police. The thing that makes this so different from other round-ups is that the French took it a step further to Hitler's cruel orders and took all women and children too. 80,000 taken. None returned. All were gassed. An embarrassing and dark time in French history. The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars was because I was very disappointed when the chapters stopped alternating between 1942 and 2002 and because the end held some inconsistencies and possibly some poor editing. It also went on a little too long because you can easily guess the ending many pages ahead of time. But don't get me wrong, I would highly recommend this book.
