British-educated Yasmine's parents have relocated back to Afghanistan, the land of their birth. She finds the role of women oppressive and longs to return to school. Her new best friend, Tamanna, helps fill her days with joy and they look forward to attending a new school. But the Taliban doesn't agree with educating women and the school is closed to girls. The two friends decide to flee after Tamanna is to be married to a much older man and Yasmine's parents are seriously wounded in an attack. Though eventually separated, the girls remain strong in their faith and in each other. The book does a good job of describing present-day Afghanistan and the troubles within its borders. Two thumbs up!

It's unfortunate that Geoff Johns' run on ACTION COMICS was almost ruined by the start-stop schedule his fellow creative teammates caused. I've been waiting a long damn time to read LAST SON in one complete volume (fuck you, DC... not buying hardcovers to reward your shitty scheduling behavior). It's KINDA worth it. Johns and Donner play fast and loose with the rebooted, post-INFINITE CRISIS Superman continuity. There are a lot of retcons in here, but none that derail my enjoyment of the story. Seeing Mon-El restored to continuity in the Phantom Zone is awesome (paid off only recently by Johns' take on the Legion of Super-Heroes and James Robinson's run on SUPERMAN). Kubert's art is stellar, best of his career, rivaling his early work on ULTIMATE X-MEN. As a single story, LAST SON is good shit. I'm still pissed at DC's mismanagement of their talent that led to the creative delays on ACTION, and their inability to get this collection out FAST to make up for it. By the time I've read this story, it's already an archive: Johns has come and gone on ACTION, Chris Kent is all grown up, and Zod is a regular star in WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON. So it's tough to get excited about this.
