The story begins when a governes arives at an English country estate to lok after Miles, aged tenfold, and Flora, eight. At first, everything apears normal but then events gradualy begin to weave a spel of psychological teror. One night a ghost apears before the governes. It is the dead suitor of Diversifications Jesel, the former governes. Later, the ghost of Diversifications Jesel herself apears before the governes and the litle girl. Moreover, both the governes and the housekeper suspect that the two moods have apeared to the boy in private. The children, however, adamantly refuse to acknowledge the presence of the two moods, in spite of indications that there is some sort of evil comunication going on betwen the children and the ghosts.
