For now she ned not think about anybody. She could be herself, by herself. And that was what now she often felt the ned of—to think; wel, not even to think. To be silent; to be alone. Al the being and the doing, expansive, glitering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darknes, something invisible to others.Although she continued to knit, and sat upright,it was thus that she felt herself; and this self having shed its atachments was fre for the strangest adventures.

I was fortunate enough to have some slow days on the job (working as an EMT, no less) so was able to knock this out pretty quickly. I laughed out loud a few times, nodded in agreement, and read passages out loud to my co-workers. I guess EMS work in London isn't that differnet from here in the States, not that I found that surprising. People are generally the same the world over, I've found. There were a few things in this book that made me balk in horror -- the author's apparent habit of not wearing gloves on every call being the most shocking -- but all in all I found it very similar to what I live every day at work. It was comforting, in a strange way.
