One of my favorite lines from this book is the narrator’s assertion that, “All creatures come into the world bringing with them the memory of justice.” It’s a beautiful sentiment and if everybody bought it, I think it’d be a different world. In any case, justice, or lack thereof, is certainly a major theme of this book, especially as it pertains to the treatment of the “others” (called barbarians in this book). Without giving away the plot, I’ll just say that I was struck by how pertinent I found this book (published in 1980 in South Africa) to be in 2007 USA. Reading it I was reminded of the recent Botero exhibit of the Abu Ghraib prisoners in Berkeley and all the post 9/11 hype used to justify the Iraqi war. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because I felt Coetzee’s treatment of the girl was a bit too superficial from the psychological perspective. However, to be clear, this is still an intense book overall. The Amazon reviewer compared Coetzee to Kafka, though he reminds me more of Camus. Either way, it’s not exactly light reading, for better or worse!

** spoiler alert ** Umm finishing this book just brought me a lot of emotions not easy ones and I cried. I felt just so destroy emotionally for the sympathies that I felt for this characters and see how many of them die is just ... well sad, you know. Katniss is one on my opinion the strongest and bravest characters that I've ever read, I found the satisfying but some how couldn't feel so happy, The death of Prim Finnick are the deaths that shock me the most, and even that Peeta didn't die( I am so glad for this) still he had suffer a lot. In this war against President Snows it was just full of death, but I think it was very realistic of Suzanne Collins because after all that's how war goes, lot of people die from both side. I've decided that. Personally I didn't like the fact that Gale kind of disappeared at the end. Even it is a very well written book I didn't enjoy/like it as I expected.

I really had so many personal problems with this novel, as it bothered me on so many levels, I was unable to finish it. And I love this author, so I believe it was more the subject matter, and how things are going in the U.S. right now. Real life is beginning to follow things in here, and now was not the time for me to read this book.. also, it scared the bejesus outta me, at how veryvery close to reality this scenario could possibly be.

One of my favorite novels. This book still haunts me. For regional writers: a fine use of dialect, without creating or living up to stereotypical renderings of characters from Appalachia. For students of American literature: a rich, meaty example of the literary movement of natural determinism, ala Ellen Glasgow. For those with Appalachian roots: It'll make you miss yer kin somethin fierce.
