Can't believe it's over. While there were some ambiguities in the fighting I found a bit weak--as well as the explanation of how the trace of harry's love marked blood functions, overall I thought it was phenomenal. Re-reading immediately.

Vera Dietz is totally appealing ..strong, opinionated, capable, and wonderfully flawed. She lives with her parsimonious father and next door to the Kahns. They listen to Mr. Kahn regularly beat his wife and Charlie Kahn has been her best friend since childhood. But childhood is in the past and Vera and Charlie struggle with defining their relationship as they go through high school. Charlie makes some bad choices and winds up dead on his lawn, accused of an awful crime. Vera is torn between anger at her friend and the need to clear his name. The foreshadowing is overdone but otherwise, this is a wonderful book.
