This is a monster book - 530 pages, dense text.... if it wasnt so good, it may have been a slog. Aspiring writers are encouraged to start a book with something that would grasp a readers attention. How about a nun giving birth to twins in the hospital where she works with the father, the British Surgeon Thomas Stone. Not bad.... a this event, plus a bit of back story on how the nun got from India to Addis Adaba takes the first 105 pages. The writing is incredible and draws you straight into the book. The birth event is told from the POV of one of the twins, Marion, as Stone makes a terrible hash of the birth. Things are made for Stone and he runs away from the event and his responsibilities but his shadow is cast over the book as we watch the children grow up in their ethiopian hospital, with the country in the grip of revolution. The twins are brought up by Ghosh (the books moral compass) and Hema and they both follow the family traditions of medicine. During the revolution, Marian is associtated with a terrorist act and has to flee the country to America where he works as a junior doctor, eventually and inevitably meeting up with his estranged father, now one of the leading liver transplant doctors in 1970s america. All sets itself up for the crux of the novel, which I won't recount here. There is so much to admire in the book - its lengthy but breathless in its execution. Every action has an impact. There are political, religious, sexual politics education discussion points in the wrapper of a modern thriller. Amazing characters that are slowly allowed to developed. Medical procedures and disese discussed in a way that is never unfathomable or dull. It's a joy all the way through. In some ways it reminded me of the kite runner and 1000 splendid suns but this is on a much broader canvass. The author is a practicing doctor in America and the book has biographical elements but how on earth did he get the time to write it and to be such an excellent author of fiction? Highly recommended.
