This was a thrill ride from the beginning to the very end. There were a lot of twists and turns throughout the book. Actually, when I read the Prologue I thought that the book was going to be made up of short stories. The Accident is the story of a small business owner, Glen Garber and his daughter, Kelly trying to come to terms with the death of his wife and her mother. Sheila appeared to have caused an accident while driving drunk. Glen knew that this was not who his wife was and is intent on getting to the bottom of what happened. What happens next is...lots of twists, turns and you think that you are going to be able to figure it all out. Thanks to Net Galley and Bantam Books for the ARC.

...Ehhhh. I'm willing to wait for A Dance with Dragons to see how I feel about this series' turn of events, but this book was severely disappointing. Not because the OMGCHARACTERSILOVE aren't in it, or because OMGTHISCHARACTER died, it was just... As a reader and a wannabe writer, I tend to follow the advice of "Show, not tell" when applicable. FFC took the opposite road, and it suffered for it. Many characters were killed off or fought in great battles that you only hear about in Cersei's boardroom meetings. Yawn. Granted, DWD might show us these events from the others' points of views, but... I would rather have had that to begin with, than see a crazy, paranoid wench's increasingly crazy and paranoid view of the happenings. Some neat events took place, but very few story-turning events happened, unless you count killing off MORE staple characters to replace them with Greyjoys as crucial to the plot. It's good to have it read in order to prepare for the next book, but in short, I think a Cliff's Notes would have served me better.

This is a true story assembled and researched by a family member around 75 years after the fact I'm also a grade school teacher, so was naturally drawn to the book. This book has many levels, all very historic as to the ways of young girls in society families of their time in history. I learned very much from the time period. It is also historic in the homesteading of early Colorado. These two young women never said "I can't do it" to anything. You've got to read it. Its that good. Much better than reading the same old timeless fiction novels.

by Philip Reeve Opening line: "That morning they were making paper boys." This book! Is so good! I loved it! I am exclamatory! After Londoners overthrew their Scriven overlords, Dr. Gideon Crumb, a member of the often-reviled Order of Engineers, found "a baby in a basket with an old blanket laid over her and a label tied around her wrist, upon which someone had written just four words: Her name is Fever." So he took the child back to London, to Godshawk Head where the Order lives and raised her to be a proper Engineer: rational and orderly. But Fever has eyes that are different colors. She has a scar on the base of her neck. And sometimes life is not orderly or rational in the slightest. I've been a fan of Philip Reeve for awhile. I loved the Larklight series which was light and fun and witty. I've enjoyed the two of the Mortal Engines quartet that I've read so far (so DON'T tell me what happens in the next two). But so far I haven't completely loved Hester and Tom, although I care about them quite a lot. I loved Fever almost immediately. (She would be horrified to hear that.) In addition, I found the prequelness of the book fascinating. I'm often not wowed by prequels, but in this case I felt like it was not only good to have this backstory, it was necessary. And it was fun to have that moment when I realized the connection between characters or plots. In one case that connection was absolutely heartbreaking. But I won't say any more than that. In short, I loved Fever and her story and I can't wait to read more about her. Book source: public library Book information: Scholastic, 2009; YA Philip Reeve, previously: Mortal Engines, and again (these are both slightly odd reviews--I enjoyed the book much more than they suggest!)
