This was an incredible book. Far removed from the giant bumbling green thing of Hollywood pop-culture, it is a provoking psychological thriller. It inadvertently touches upon philosophical issues such as the nature of a soul, what makes someone human, the natural condition of man and the ability of man to "play God" (something that I am fairly sure Shelley was the first to come up with). What is also amazing about this work is that it is arguably the first work of science-fiction. Ever. This book is full of themes and motifs, right to the brim. Spirits, nature, knowledge, heaven, light and of course the ubiquitous references to eyes. I am not a very experienced reader, but given my limited knowledge I would say that she is hitting you over the head with her many themes. It's as if she's constantly asking you if you "Get it now?!". She also does this with her many allusions to Milton's Paradise Lost, at one point even mentioning the connection outright. I would also like to add that Victor Frankenstein is an enormous pansy. It's hard to turn a page without him weeping or even fainting outright. This is all well and good, considering that intense emotions were idealized in the period, but it does get annoying after a while.
