Completely shunned upon its original release in France, Michel Houellebecq uses the story of two half brothers in Paris to create a brilliant and totally neccessary portrait of the human condition. It is his indictment of the sexual, economic, technological, and social upheavals in the west since the 60s.
This is a book read to me long before I got around to reading it myself, long before I knew anything of Stalin. As a child, I engaged with the stories of the animals, and was saddened when Boxer was taken away. As an adult, I appreciated it as a commentary on the false promise of Stalinist revolution, how the animals having taken over the farm, divide into oppressors and oppressed..all animals are equal..but some are more equal than others....
