This was awesome, and confirms that my indifference to the first Dirk Gently story was most likely because I listened to the dramatization instead of the straight-up audiobook. This was engaging and hysterical: essentially what you'd get if Douglas Adams had written American Gods and set it in England.

A popcorn read for the highly literate, with lots of clever wordplay but somewhat less comedy than I had hoped for. As the title suggests, it would be highly helpful if you have already read Jane Eyre, especially since a large amount of the plot revolves around alternate versions of the book's ending. This might come as a rather nasty spoilerish surprise if you have not (and I am grateful to Emmie for providing a warning to that effect). Fforde gets extra points in my book for being one of only two authors that I have ever come across to make a literary allusion to Alfred Bester.
