I really like McCullough's biographies. In this case, I learned so much about the man who has been hidden (in my mind) between the geniuses of Washington and Jefferson, 1st and 3rd presidents. I was particularly intrigued by the relationship between Jefferson and Adams. They were very different in background, personality, and sometimes philosophy; but they shared a love for the country and a vision for its future. I learned many things I never knew (or had forgotten) about Adams' role in shaping the philosophical basis for the American Revolution and his actions in the Continental Congresses. The book covers his family life, presidency, and retirement years, up to the date of his death (shared with Jefferson - July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years after the country's birth). Fascinating reading.
Beginning with the first great awakening, Armstrong shows how closely religion has been tied up with American history and how perilous it is to ignore it.

Depressing I could barely finish this book. It was too depressing for me and definitely too smart. I prefer the musical.
