This is translated from the Italian, but feels reassuringly native-English with the exotic Italian flavor still present. The characters are somewhat characatured (?), but not forbiddingly so; rather, they serve as Rockwell-esque amusements. The story is off-beat enough to interest on its own, and is well-concluded.

I've loved this book since I first read in my 4th grade literature circle, and I've loved sharing it with two groups of students since then. I think it does such a great job of humanizing such a terrible set of events and making them understandable for younger people. It's really great to use as part of a unit on World War 2 or just as a read aloud. The characters created by Lois Lowry are really memorable and touching!

100 Words in Search of Precision In the spirit of "Star Trek”, DFW boldly wanders through the darkness of the modern world, holding a candle, recording everything he witnesses in minute, almost helmet-cam detail. He isn’t just preoccupied by or satisfied with the absurdity and comic potential of the world. He wants to scrutinise it, diagnose it and cure it. Out of the minutiae comes meaning and illumination. It’s up to the reader to sift through the minutiae, to discard the mullock and the fool’s gold, and to find the gold that DFW has placed there for us to find. His works are incandescent, deeply philosophical and deeply socio-political. I read it in less than half a day and I liked it. I didn't read it because it was recommended or had celebrity endorsements or glowing reviews. It captured the character and his condition well and was engaging in the logical way he related to the world around him. I relate that way sometimes myself. It doesn't really make you feel good. It's not supposed to. I found that the ending however gave me hope for his future- to maybe have a "normal" life for himself. I think it's one of those love-it or hate-it books.
