I needed a palliative for the classism in Agatha Christie after reading a story of hers in which a male character had "that air of authority which the lower classes so adore," and a mystery starring a maid as the sleuth seemed just the thing. The mystery in this book is more along the lines of Mary Stewart than Agatha Christie; it's not particularly hard to figure out whodunnit, and the interest lies in watching the interpersonal drama that unfolds in response to the crime. The characters in Neely's book are interesting enough to justify that approach. Blanche in particular is great: smart and observant and opinionated, especially on the topics of race and domestic service.
